Polar Training Center

In less than a decade, the use of kites has drastically changed expeditions to Greenland and Antarctica. I do think that we will see more and more use of kites in polar expeditions on super long routes that we never thought possible in the past. Learning how to use kites safely and maximize their use is a skill that needs to be learned and mastered. There is no better place than on the Lac des Deux-Montagnes, situated just north of Montreal.

The Lac des Deux-Montagnes offers unparallel snow kiting opportunities. The lake is 5 kilometers wide and 30 long, with a predominant westerly wind blowing down the lake. From end of December until mid-March, the lake is snow covered, with temperature ranging from -5 to -20 C. This is a true kiting paradise and a great place to learn and master your skills before heading to Greenland or the South Pole.

Not only does the area excel for kiting, it is also superb for polar training to develop skills such as:

  • Clothing & sleeping systems – moisture management
  • Camping equipment – tents, stoves, cooking gear, etc.
  • Food, menu, cooking, hydration
  • Navigation – compass, GPS, use of sun & shadow
  • Communication – Iridium, PLB, Argos, Spot
  • First Aid equipment & evacuation procedures

We will make use of Polar Consultants’ little chalet on the shore of the lake as a base for classroom type sessions, a break from the cold or a hot lunch. As well, Montreal’s outdoor stores specialize in winter clothing and equipment, therefore purchases or rental before and during the training is not a problem.
